Pico de la Nieve - Refugio del Pilar
From the Pico de la Nieve peak (2239 meters) it is about 18 kilometers to the Refugio del Pilar (1440 meters). Follow the trail south, which leads you into a relatively steep initial decline, until it levels back out approximately 200 meters lower. Ups and downs define a large part of the next section of the hike, with breathtaking views into the caldera, and later on to the eastern and western side of the island. Stone roses line the way and climb up along the rocks as you make your way through the phenomenal scenery.
After 6 kilometers you arrive at the Refugio Punta den los Roques, a well maintained shelter where you can spend the night free of charge and without any reservations. As this is not a staffed shelter you should sign into the guest book as soon as you arrive, as it operates on a "first come" basis. In total the shelter sleeps 20 and offers solar electricity, but no drinking water or other facilities. From here you have an excellent view of the Aridane valley and across to the Refugio del Pilar.
From here you have a downhill section of about 8 kilometers, leading you through pine woods to the Pista de Cumbre Nueva, which is often covered in clouds when the passat winds blow across the range and into the Aridane valley from the east. This last section, about 4 kilometers, is almost level with a last little incline into the Refugio del Pilar.
