San Juan Lava Field
PR LP 14.1
A visit to the lava fields is an absolute "must" in La Palma. However, due to its sharp and pointy nature, the lava fields are not without dangers. In order to avoid injuries and damage to the environment, it is important to stay on the designated path whenever possible.
There is a brief stretch of difficult terrain on the way back, specifically the section descending into Llano de Tamanca, which is narrow and very steep. Stable hiking shoes are strongly recommended.
Nature Reserves along the trail: Parque Natural de Cumbre Vieja
Seasonality: All year
Torre del Time
Starting Point: 1129 meters
Landing: Playa Grande de Tazacorte
You can reach the "Gorgonians" zone in 25 meters depth, by moving approximately 40 meters out into the open sea from the boat landing point. As you dive down you can see the gigantic rocks stacked on top of each other like cookies on top of the black sand ground. It is a bizarre underwater world, unique to La Palma and not available on any of the other Canary Islands. Much like an underwater forest, the ground is covered with 1 meter high corals and red gorgonians.
Depth: Average 15 meters, maximum 45 meters
Arcos del Charco Verde
Eastern Border of Marine Reserve
Directly at the border to the marine reserve, there are three spectacular arches. Usually visibility is quite good (up to 35 meters).
Many triangular pipefish, amberjacks, muray eels, several different crustaceans, and occasional sepias can be seen.
Depth: Maximum 18 meters
Difficulty level: Easy
Directly in the bay of the harbor of Tazacorte, next to the outer protection wall, in 17 meters depth, rest the remains of the only shipwreck around La Palma, the Santa Úrsula. This stem-cargo-freighter caught on fire in the 1940s and sank.
Nowadays the hull is almost entirely covered in sand. It is often possible to see crayfish, brown shrimp, a cluster of french grunts, surinam grunts, lemon soles, parrot fish, muray eels and sea anemones.
Depth: Maximum 14 meters
Difficulty level: Easy
